When do you want to go to Japan?
Winter
Weather: Winter in Japan lasts from December to March in most areas of the country. It is mild on the main island of Honshu, where Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto are located. The southern islands of Kyushu and Okinawa are warm during these times.
Activities: Hokkaido is world-famous for its snow festival in February. It also receives some of the best powder snow in the world, making it a skier's or snowboarder's paradise. Hot springs are also a popular destination. Many popular temples and gardens are also less crowded during this time.
When to Book: Buy air tickets and book hotels 3-6 months in advance.
Tips: Avoid traveling during the New Year's holidays (the last few days of December and the first few days of January). Transportation will be expensive and crowded during this time.
Spring
Weather: Cherry blossoms begin to bloom at the end of March and into April in most areas. The temperatures are cool and mild with chillier evenings.
Activities: The entire country has cherry blossom viewing parties and festivals. Many temples, shrines, and castles also do "light ups" where you can see the cherry blossoms against the night sky.
When to Book: Buy air tickets and book hotels in early winter.
Tips: Avoid traveling during the Golden Week holidays, usually the first or second week of May. Hotels and transportation will be expensive and crowded during this time.
Summer
Weather: The rainy season begins in Japan in mid-June and lasts through mid-July. After the rainy season it becomes quite hot and humid, and typhoon season begins in August and lasts through September.
Activities: There are more festivals in the summer than any other time of year, including magnificent fireworks festivals, the famous Gion Festival in Kyoto. Hot spring and beach resorts are especially popular during this time of year. Hokkaido also boasts cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery in summer. Beaches in Kyushu and Okinawa are at their peak during summer.
When to Book: Buy air tickets and book hotels at least 4 months in advance.
Tips: Avoid traveling during the Obon holidays in the middle of August. Hotels and transportation will be expensive and crowded during this time.
Autumn
Weather: Autumn in Japan lasts from the end of September through the end of November. It is one of the most pleasant times to visit Japan. The cool, crisp air and clear days make it ideal of sight-seeing.
Activities: Autumn foliage and chrysanthemums are exhibited throughout the country in temples, shrines, and gardens. Similarly to the cherry blossom season, many temples, shrines, and castles also do "light ups" with autumn foliage.
When to Book: Buy air tickets and book hotels in spring.
Tips: Hotels and public transportation can be extremely crowded during this time, especially during the Silver Week holidays towards the end of September.
