With over 260 islands spread out over the Matsuhima Bay area, its views are truly spectactular.  Yamadera is a mountain temple dating back to the 8th century located in tranquil woods. Day 1 - TOKYO (ARRIVAL)
Arrive at Narita or Haneda airport. You will be met by a representative and helped to board an airport bus. Transfer to hotel by bus. 

Day 2 - TOKYO (AM: CITY TOUR, PM: FREE)
Visit Meiji Shrine, Tokyo Tower, Imperial East Garden and Ginza (Tour disbands in Ginza). Return to your accommodation on your own.

Day 3 - TOKYO - HIRAIZUMI (D)
Take the shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo and travel to Hiraizumi (one transfer). Free at leisure. Enjoy visiting historical sites such as Motsuji and Chusonji Temple (registered as a World Heritage site).

Day 4 - HIRAIZUMI - MATSUSHIMA (B)(D)
Transfer to Hiraizumi Station and take a local train to Matsushima. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel by free shuttle van. Free at leisure. Matsushima is the general name for a group of some 260 islands, large and small, that are scattered in the coastal part of Matsushima Bay. Matsushima's great view is considered one of the three most beautiful sites in Japan. Enjoy onsen and Japanese dinner at your accommodation.

Day 5 - MATSUSHIMA - SENDAI - YAMADERA - ZAO ONSEN (B)(D)
Take the local train to Sendai, the largest city in Tohoku region (the Northeastern region of Japan). Visit Aoba Castle. Local train to Yamadera. You can see Risshaku-ji (Yamadera) in front of the station. This temple is one of the prominent temples in the Tohoku region, and was reportedly found in year 860. The whole Mt.Hoju is the precinct of the temple, where ancient trees grow luxuriantly. Everywhere in the vast temple area, you can find rock caves and queerly shaped rocks, eroded by wind and water, as well as many other temple buildings, including the Konpon-chudo. Try climbing the 1,100 steps up to the top of Yamadera (literally translates to "mountain temple"). Take the local train to Yamagata, and the local bus to Zao Onsen .

Day 6 - ZAO ONSEN - YAMAGATA - TOKYO(B)
Enjoy hiking, trekking or skiing at Zao National Park depending on the season. Local bus to Yamagata. Transfer back to Tokyo by bullet train.

Day 7 - TOKYO (DEPARTURE)
Transfer to Narita or Haneda airport by airport bus.
